In Eve it is Important to pick one career path for your character because in order to progress, you have to train skills. There are SO many skill in the game that it would take you 26 years to train every single one to the max (level 5). So, with that being said, lets not waist time on skills we don't need.
There are 5 basic attributes that affect the speed at which you learn skills. Perception, Willpower, Memory, Intelligence, and Charisma. For the most part Perception and Willpower are paired together and affect skills like Spaceship Command, Gunnery, and Missile Operations. Memory and Intelligence are paired and affect Learning skills, Science skills, and Electronics skills, ect...., While Charisma affects any skill dealing with interaction, such as Trade or Corp Management.
Under your learning skills, each skill you train give you 1 attribute point per skill level. So it is VERY important to get you learning skills up as fast as possible. This will greatly reduce the time it takes you to train other skills and thus you can progress faster. Example, One character has 12 memory and 12 intelligence, the other has 25 Memory and 25 Intelligence. The first guy is training a Science skill to level 3, and it will take him 1 Day and 22 hours. The other guy starts the same skill and it only takes him 21 hours total, less than half the time. So just remember that the learning skill may seem like a waist at first, but in the long run they make all the difference.
