So you want to play EVE?
Ok so lets jump in and get your race and profession down.
There are four races in eve. These four are Caldari, Gallente, Minmitar, Amarr. It doesn’t really matter which you choose. If you pick one, you can easily change what ships you fly according to the skills you learn. The only benefit to picking a race is the starting skills you get. Caldari combat pilots will get Caldari frigate to level four and are automatically able to pilot all tech 1 Caldari frigates. The same goes for each other race. For industrial characters, it is usually best to start out with Caldari or Minmitar for the bonuses to your stats you get as you build your character.
You have five attributes. Each attribute will help you time wise on the skills you learn. Intelligence and Memory are mainly for industrial characters. They are also good for support skills. Perception and Willpower are mainly for combat characters. They determine how fast you can get into other ships, and how fast your weapon skills train. Charisma is mainly for leadership, social, and trade skills. It’s nice, but is the lowest importance for whatever you want to be. There are always drawbacks. A character with high intelligence and memory will take a while to get into new ships. A person with Perception and Willpower will take a while to get their support skills done, have a long wait for any industrial skills, but will be able to get into new ships fast. I would recommend trying to keep whichever two skills your profession will need as even as possible, with them being three to four points higher than the other two. My industrial character has 23 int and mem, with a 20 in per, and will. Support skills might take a while to train on a combat character, but you only have twelve or so to deal with, while you have up to forty ship skills. Again, for a industrial character, you have up to fifty science and industry skills, while you can easily be happy with being able to fly only five ships.
I am going to list some things here. This is to help understand the differences between the different races ships and help you determine what you want to do for a combat pilot. All ships use energy, which is called capacitor. All ships have shield, armor, and structure. There are four damage types in the game, Kinetic, Thermal, EM, and Explosive
Caldari
Defense – They use shields to tank with.
Offence – They can use missiles (all 4 damage types) or hybrid guns (Kinetic and
Thermal damage only)
Capacitor- guns use energy, missiles do not. Some shield tanking uses energy, some doesn’t.
Specialty - They have the best electronic warfare ships in the game. Best well rounded Player vs Everything race, great mission running ships but the most expensive ships in game. HAVE to have rigs to be good.
Rank- 1/4 – Easiest to play, but expensive because of the rigs
Gallente
Defense – They use armor to tank with
Offense – They use hybrid guns. (Kinetic and Thermal damage only)
Capacitor- guns use energy, armor tanking uses energy
Specialty – Cheapest ships to use in pvp
Rank - 2/4 – Easy to play, cheap ships but stuck with 2 damage types
Minmitar
Defense - Some ships shield tank, some armor tank, some speed tank
Offense- They use missiles (all 4 damage types) and projectile guns (3 damage types) primarily explosive damage with additions of the other 3.
Capacitor- guns do not use energy. All tanking uses energy
Specialty- Arguably the best ships in game to pvp with, but expensive
Rank- 3/4 – Hard to play, hard to get started, but probably the best in game ships since you have almost all damage types to use and the fastest ships in game.
Amarr
Defense- They use armor to tank with
Offense- They use lasers(EM, Thermal), high end ships use missiles(all)
Capacitor- lasers use large amounts of energy, armor tanking uses energy
Specialty- guns do the most damage to other races, but most energy use ships
Rank- 4/4 – Hardest ships to play with. Everything runs on capacitor, so if anyone uses neutralizers on you, you are a paper weight. Anything that is weak to kinetic and explosive damages will take you forever to kill with guns. You are stuck with guns till you can get into tech 2 ships and missile skills, so look at 6 months.
Guns versus Missiles –
Missiles always hit, unless your target shoots them down with anti missile rockets. You can pick and choose which damage types to use. The problem is guns can do two to three times the damage missiles can. The missiles with the most damage have to be fired up close.
Guns are hard to deal with, but do tons of damage. Amarr (EM, Thermal) lasers are the highest damage guns in the game. Next is Minmitar (Explosive primary, with kinetic, EM, and Thermal mixed in the ammo), and then Gallente/Caldari(Kinetic, Thermal). The primary problem with guns is they don’t always hit. You have to have tracking modules and all sorts of precision skills in order to hit anything. Guns have to be used mid range, and have a sweet spot for max damage. If a ship is close to you, good luck hitting it.
